A few months ago our boy Wordsmith hit us up about a music video he was about to shoot for a producer named A.Sesay and asked me to come out to the shoot. Big shout out to PEDX Baltimore for letting us do some of the shoot at their location. A.Sesay is an interesting producer who I had the pleasure of meeting for the first time at the Vintage Limited/PEDX “Always Dope” show back in March. He’s originally from Sierra Leone (West Africa) and his parents are diplomats so he ended up being a Maryland resident. With influences like Dr. Dre, Hi Tek, DJ Scratch, Premo, etc. A.Sesay rocks the beats with a unique flare. Check for his album “The A Special” coming summer 2010.

We were blessed to have a TON of screen time with our gear in the music video. I think every single men’s tshirt and the fitted hat where all spotted on camera! No joke! So see if you find them all like a Where’s Waldo, Vintage style!

When I first met Wordsmith back in May of 2007 he had a song on his Myspace profile called “Ode to the Pioneers” which was like a prelude to “As the Art Fades Away”. The song paid homage to – well – the pioneers of hip-hop greats like Tribe Called Quest, Run DMC, etc. From that point on Word had my ear and we’ve worked together collaborating our brands such as him being featured in our catalogs and lookbooks to us helping keep our customers in the know about his music to some of our clothing even being seen in his music videos.

“As the Art Fades Away” is one of my favorite Wordsmith songs off of his debut album that you need to go out and pick-up right now!! Vintage Experience is the album and its available on iTunes and Amazon so go get it and support!! With the radio being so overly saturated in weak artists (and I use that term ‘artists’ loosely) its refreshing to hear something like this break. No doubt you have a hit on your hands Word! And thank you for all the looks in the video too!

There is a few instances in your life when you walk somewhere and feel like you’ve been transplanted into another time or place. Saturday’s Wild Style reunion tour right in downtown Baltimore was like de ja vu for someone who grew up on 80’s culture where hip-hop purists of modern times are rejuvenated by pop-lockin bboy battles, crate digging vinyl cutting deejays scratching on tables attending to a crowd of graffiti writers and backpackers tagging up walls all around. This was the scene over the weekend at Load of Fun in the Arts District at the heart of Baltimore that played a startling contrast to modern day radio’s depiction of rap. If nothing else, its proving that the roots of the art form are still alive and supporters are die hards who will never let the pop culture of today forget its true heritage.

For those not in the know, Wild Style is the 1983 motion picture dubbed “the first hip-hop movie” and had a list of cameos from that era including legends such as: Fab Five Freddy, The Rock Steady Crew, Cold Crush Brothers, Grand Master Flash, Busy Bee and many more. The film directed by Charlie Ahearn became a cult classic over the years being co-signed by everyone from Nas to Cypress Hill.

While many people where getting ready for their Memorial Day break I had the pleasure of taking part in this incredible event over the weekend. Of all the shows I’ve been to in Baltimore this in my opinion had to be one of the best. Two minutes after walking in the door you feel like you’ve stepped into another World. Hand painted vintage boomboxes strummed the walls on display courtesy of Atlanta’s Mad Clout crew while DJ’s spun early breakdance and hip-hop classics. Vendors displayed artwork and Wild Style memorabilia including blown up photographs from the set of the movie. In the middle of the gallery was the Vintage Clothing Limited table showcasing all of our shirts and fitted hats and directly across from us was the main stage area.

In the main stage area the Wild Style movie played on a large projector screen as bboys battled looking like they just stepped out of the movie flexing their skills for the love of the art and culture. Walking through the main stage area to the back alley your hit with the smell of spray paint fumes and the incredible sight of hundreds of tags and murals sprawling across the alley walls spilling onto the streets in a decadence of colors and styles. Back packers and on lookers created a surreal atmosphere as everywhere you turned you seen someone with a black book in hand sketching or graffiti writers with their catalog of cans at toe getting up all around you. From the street level to writers on scaffolds and ladders, the artwork for fans of the culture such as myself was truly something to see! Right there in the midst of the crowd was even graffiti legends Cope 2 and Indie 184 creating a Wild Style dedication next to local Baltimore artists swapping cans and enjoying the experience.

Later in the day I had the privilege of meeting DJ legend and the “creator of the scratch” himself, Grand Wizard Theodore! He was digging the wears at our Vintage Limited table and even picked up one of our shirts! I also had the honor of seeing the master at work as he cut up the tables. “No Serato! Look at that!” Busy Bee chanted in the background as the Grand Wizard used his elbows to scratch a rock rift back and fourth of a classic 80’s breakbeat juggling the records in perfect sync with his decades of experience being evident to his DJ peers giving props from the crowd cheering.

Over the course of the night I met up with hundreds of people. I must have handed out well over 300 business cards to passers by and talked to everyone who walked up and gave us props for the quality in our line and the amazing artwork. To everyone who came out I can’t tell you enough how encouraging it is to hear your feedback on what we’re doing! Its enouraging and humbling! Much appreciated and much respect!

Also, big props to Garth from PEDX Baltimore who really took care of us and hooked us up with the best table in the gallery! Also shouts to Garth and PEDX for putting on this event in collaboration with Busy Bee and the rest of the Wild Style crew! The event was truly authentic as not only was Charlie Ahearn the director of the movie on hand but so many other respected cast members and contributors to the movie lending to the atmosphere.

All in all it was a great event and the Vintage Hip-hop experience is one where I feel the most at home!! I hope that Vintage Clothing Limited can be part of more events like this one in the future.

Its been over a month since my last post. Hope you don’t think its cuz I don’t have much going on. Its quite the opposite. I’ve never been so busy in my life. I’ve secured a few new clients and had to raise my rates cuz the demand is more then I can handle on my own. I’m in the process of moving into a new office. 669 Atone St. NW Atlanta GA 30318. Its a small upstairs loft located in between Stankonia and Zac’s Recording. Prime location for lots of new traffic. This is a real exciting time for me, not only am I seeing my business grow but I find myself surrounded with creative professionals that I respect and encourage a new level of excellence.

Don’t you hate when your favorite t-shirt companies have their proverbial blogs that they struggle to update with any consistency? Don’t you hate when they drop clothes without any preliminary press only to find out that when you visit their websites weeks later they are out of your sizes already? We don’t want to be one of those.

We’re still alive at Vintage…we’ve just been busy preparing some new drops and endeavoring like never before to get more things moving. We’re proud to have been the official sponsor of the Smokin’ Needles Tour that hit overseas this past month with Chip Fu, Phife Dawg, and DJ Rasta Root, and we’ve got more big news on the way. I moved into the position this month of officially managing all of Wordsmith’s activities. This has been a very challenging role for me, but one I’ve adapted to nicely. Wordsmith has too much going on to be laboring himself and as opportunities continue to come in, Vintage Clothing will be there as well. From an incredible set of shows at SOBs in New York City to the album release party at the Eye Bar in DC on March 30, 2010, to nearly 20 interviews with radio DJs over the past few weeks, his schedule continues to be non-stop.
